Your School is Unique. So Why Does it Look and Sound Like Everyone Else?
Your school is preparing students for a rapidly changing world. You develop confident, compassionate learners. You value belonging. Your students are known, challenged, and supported. You educate the whole child. You prepare young people not just for university, but for life. These are all important promises, and also promises that nearly every great school can make.
Spend enough time on independent school websites and you start to notice just how interchangeable the language and look can be. Change the logo at the top of the page and, in many cases, the copy and photos could belong to almost any school. Which is strange, because the schools themselves are anything but interchangeable. All you have to do is step onto the campus and you can feel the difference. The challenge is putting that difference into words (and visuals).
Important is not the same as distinctive
Of course your school should prepare students for the future. Of course students should feel they belong. Of course you care about excellence, character, curiosity, and community. All of these things matter enormously. But your unique differentiators and brand positioning aren’t simply what’s important to you. It’s what helps someone understand why your school is meaningfully different from the other top schools they could choose.
What can you say that another school cannot?
That’s where we like to start. Not, what do we want our brand to say, but what is actually true here? What would your students say is different about going to school here? What do your families value that they didn’t fully understand until they joined? What do your teachers appreciate about your unique learning community? What strategic choices has your school made that another school might not make in terms of academics, facilities, program offerings, extracurriculars…What stories keep surfacing when you talk to alumni? What happens at your school that couldn’t simply be dropped into another school’s viewbook?
The proof matters (more than the adjectives)
If you say your school is innovative, show us where the innovation happens. If you say students are known, what does being known look like when a new student walks through the doors on their first day? If you say your school develops independence, where are students genuinely trusted to make decisions, or allowed to get something wrong? If community is central to who you are, what’s distinctive about yours?
The real goal isn’t to find more creative ways to say what other schools are already saying, it’s to uncover what’s true about your school, what matters most to your community, and express it with enough clarity that it’s instantly recognizable as yours. That’s brand positioning, and once it’s clear, it becomes the foundation for everything else: your messaging, tone of voice, visuals, and the stories you tell.
Then make it recognizable
Strong positioning is more than just a tagline on your website. Your Head should articulate it. Your Board should understand it. It should be immediately clear in all of your Admissions materials, in your case for support, in your newsletter, your social media, your magazine, and your alumni communications.
That’s where clearly defined brand positioning changes the game. It informs your messaging and tone of voice: what you say, how you say it, the proof behind it, the language that sounds like you, and the clichés or jargon you avoid.
It should shape what people see as well. What should your photography or videography look like? Are you showing perfectly posed students smiling at the camera, or the sometimes messy and chaotic reality of school life? What details, poses, lighting, and styles make an image feel like your school? Your words and visuals should all be telling the same story.
